Meet Jennifer J. Coldwater. Jen's stories feature diverse characters who (like her, and me too!) believe love wins. She identifies as queer and has an invisible disability, so perhaps that why her characters love the way they do. 🌈 I can't wait to find out more about Jen! Keep reading...
Can you tell us a bit about you and how you got into writing?
I've been writing for as long as I can remember. I used to write short stories (complete with talking animals!) in elementary school. I wish I could find those stories. I picked up writing again when I did a Masters in journalism education about a decade ago. My Mizzou professors taught me so much about creative nonfiction that spills over into my fiction writing now.
Did you always know you wanted to be an author?
No. I'm pretty sure I thought I would be the only person who would ever read my writing. I'm thrilled with this turn of events!
If you could have dinner with any character from your book, who would you choose?
I'm as smitten with the MMC in Holland, My Heart as my readers are. He’s the empirically attractive Black-slash-Samoan CEO of a corporate consulting firm (think a started-in-his-dorm-room company with an eye to making corporations better citizens of the world) -- and he has excellent taste in Los Angeles restaurants.
Do you have any specific writing rituals?
The only ritual I really have is the need for several drinks at easy reach. Something hot (coffee in the morning, tea in the afternoon), something iced, and something spicy. I saw someone on Instagram describe the three drinks as something to take the edge off (a cocktail!), something to put the edge back on (caffeine), and something to wet your whistle. Love that!
Can you give us a hint about any current or future projects you’re excited about?
I’m currently writing Hannah’s Song based on 1 Samuel 1-2, Decision in Favor based on Deborah (both a prophet and a judge), and a short prequel to When Ivy Met Adam featuring her best friend Nico. It turns out I'm not just a mood reader, but a mood writer as well! I'm most excited about Decision in Favor -- it's a detective story with a recently separated FMC and MMC married couple and kind of professional rivals (she's a retired JAG officer who's now a lawyer in Beverly Hills; he's a prosecutor). She hires a detective/assistant whom both the FMC and MMC fall head over heels in love with. Hilarity ensues while they all try to solve a murder together.
